How are fine gold grams calculated?
Gross grams are the weight read from the scale; fine grams (HAS) are the pure gold inside that weight. Converting between them is a single multiplication.

Are fineness and karat the same thing?
They say the same thing on two scales. Karat states purity out of 24; fineness gives the same purity per thousand. The calculation uses fineness, because the division is directly per mille. 22 karat corresponds to 916 fineness.
Why divide by 1000?
Fineness is per thousand: 916 says that 916 thousandths of the item is pure gold. Multiplying the gross weight by that ratio and dividing by a thousand gives the pure gold inside. The same relation holds the other way: gross grams = fine grams × 1000 ÷ fineness.
Karat to fineness table
24 karat is 999, 22 karat 916, 21 karat 875, 18 karat 750, 14 karat 585, 10 karat 417, 9 karat 375, 8 karat 333 fineness. These are the values in Zer Bazaar's default karat table; if your business uses a different standard you can enter the fineness by hand.
Why is a 995 bar not 24 karat?
Borsa Istanbul's standard unworked gold is 995 fineness; 999.9 is the pure investment bar. Both are produced and accepted. What is wrong is calling a 995 bar "24 karat": 24 karat means 999. This distinction makes a direct difference in stock valuation and in the purchase and sale calculation.
Why is everything discussed in fine grams?
Pieces of different karat cannot be added by gross weight: 10 g of 14 karat and 10 g of 22 karat do not contain the same gold. Fine grams bring everything to one scale; stock, accounts and position only add up meaningfully on that scale.
